Hailing from Longsight, Manchester, Obi Ezeh aka KAPITAL K-O, was introduced to music from a young age. Raised into a musical family – his older sister (the well-known Manchester artist Adaeze) regularly sang at shows around the city, he found himself constantly surrounded by music. This was the beginning of his journey. Rap/Hip-Hop was his music of choice and he began writing and formulating rhymes from the tender age of 14. This continued until he was 16, when he recorded his first song at his sisters studio which gave him the motivation to continue.
As time progressed K-O found himself performing all over the city at shows and community events across the city and wherever he could be heard. He’s widely known for his use of witty and metaphoric lyrics and dynamic flow. This gained him a following and a buzz which made him a well known rap force in a city dominated by Garage music Mcs at the time. In 2006 K-O teamed up with fellow Manchester artist Envy in heavily featuring on their mixtapes showcasing Manchester’s finest. K-O then used personal life experiences to give the streets and the city what they wanted which was his first solo mixtape ‘No Excuses’. It proved to be a hit and quickly sold out. The CD was the raw, street and uncut side to K-O and told a story of experience ranging from childhood to streetlife. This was his official introduction to the game. It featured other Manchester artists including One-da, Hypes and many more.
Kapital K-O reached the Mobo Unsigned Act 2006 final after he won the Mancheter heat and went on to perform infront of Universal Record execs, A+R and Sugababes manager at Pineapple studios in London. The Final was covered by Newsround on ITV.
He also reached the televised final of T4 Chancers on Channel 4 where K-O was in the running to win a trip to Houston, America to spend a month working with Mathew Knowles (Beyonces father), with judges including Steve Smooth Sutherland. The show was televised for 4 weeks straight on Channel 4 and hosted by June Sarpong.
Kapital won the UK Urban Unsigned Act 2007 and performed across the country with acts including Mike GLC andPariz 1, cumulinating in a performance at the Millennium dome
In 2009 he released freestyles and teamed up with media channel giants Word on Road, who have worked with the likes of Lethal B, Wiley. Kapital filmed many viral music videos showcasing his lyrical ability. On the back of his growing re emergence he teamed up with long term friends Basil Baddoo and Micheal John (MJ23) and formed the Musical and Entertainment team known as ICON-X. Under this banner on 28th of January 2010 K-O wrote, recorded and filmed his first ever single track and video ‘SHUT IT DOWN’ featuring C.R.O.W.N (Icon-X) and Katie Mckenna. This track catapulted K-O from underground street artist to one of Manchester’s leading breakthrough artists. With the video reaching 5,000 views in its first week and playlisted for three months on Manchester’s leading radio stationUNITY Radio 92.8fm, it was clear there was a new musical force in town.
In Febuary 2011 K-O released his 2nd studio mixtape ‘I am Legend’ which was awarded Mixtape of the Week byBBC Radio 1xtra DJ’s Ace & Vis, the mixtape featured producers who have worked with the like of 50 Cent, Red Café, Crooked I and a host of others which alone brought more claim to the notion that big things are to come. Since then K-O has gone on to perform at various shows and has opened up for a host of acts including SN1 Giggs, Wiz Khalifa, Devlin and US superstar Fabolous.
In October 2012, Icon-X & R82 Records joined forces to host Street Dreams at Manchester Academy 3. The event was a huge success and broke Academy records. Kapital headlined the event, with other performers including the Icon-X team & Blizzard. Street Dreams 2 is already being planned due to success and demand for more! Since then, Kapital has continued releasing viral videos and freestyles, including the Icon-X anthem on New Years Day 2013. It gained over 1000 views within 3 days of release. A deal was signed in January 2013 with R82 Records to release‘Story So Far’ nationally.
It has been announced that Kapital K-O will support US rap legend DMX on the Manchester leg of his UK tour @ The Ritz on May 6th!
