The long-awaited return of the ‘King of British R&B’, Mark Morrison, is scheduled for 2013, with the release of a brand new single I AM WHAT I AM on July 29th and the eagerly anticipated new album (of the same title) and a worldwide tour to follow.
I AM WHAT I AM exhibits how Mark’s sound has matured, a hugely soulful ballad of self-belief with visuals to match! Set in a smoky jazz club with live musicians, The Mack’s passionate performance clearly displays his undying love of music. With an impressive remix package (including the already leaked Mark Sparks remix featuring Crooked I) I AM WHAT I AM is a very fitting way to launch his return.
Mark Morrison was the most successful British R&B singer of the mid-90s and was the first black male solo artist to reach number one in the 90s. His breakthrough single, RETURN OF THE MACK became a Top Ten hit worldwide in 1996, and opened the US market for him the following year.
His debut album, also titled RETURN OF THE MACK followed, and became a multiplatinum success. It reached number four in the UK chart, and sold 3 million albums worldwide. It spun off several more hit singles over the next year. CRAZY (RE-MIX), TRIPPIN, HORNY and MOAN & GROAN would all reach the UK Top-10, making him the first artist in British pop history to have five Top-10s from their debut album.
In 1997 he received four Brit nominations, a Mercury Music Prize nomination, an MTV Europe award nomination and 5MOBO nominations (including winning best R&B), as RETURN OF THE MACK began to climb its way to number two on the American Billboard charts receiving platinum status en-route. It stayed on the Billboard charts for an incredible 41 weeks.
In 2006, Morrison made a return with an independent album INNOCENT MAN. It featured collaborations with industry heavyweights DMX, Elephant Man, and Alexander O’Neal. The album contained UK hit singles such as INNOCENT MAN featuring DMX.
One of the most talked about artists that singlehandedly pioneered the R&B movement of the 90’s is now back to reclaim his title. With a new album under his belt and ready to go, and his first worldwide tour in motion – The Mack is BACK!
