Kick Snare And An Idea Part 2” is out on 10th June on Tru Thoughts. The second of two singles by Ty under the “Kick Snare And An Idea EP” banner, this package brings two more new songs. It closely follows “Part 1”, which made a widespread impact in April, including Official BBC 6Music Playlisting and MTV Base Playlisting for lead cut “Like You Never”, in-depth interviews with DJ 279 (Choice FM) and Huey Morgan (BBC 6Music), and repeat airplay from MistaJam (BBC 1Xtra) and Charlie Sloth (1Xtra), among heavy media support.
Marking the next step in an illustrious career, this comeback from Ty – the Mercury nominated producer, rapper, member of the Hip Hop Shakespeare Company and all-round preternatural musical talent – has been met with big love from mainstream and underground tastemakers and fans alike. The sold-out London launch party saw the Jazz Café packed out and buzzing to Ty’s masterful, charismatic and humorous set alongside a talent-studded line-up of guest performers including the likes of Akala and Durrty Goodz.
The opening track on “Kick Snare & An Idea Part 2” is “Let’s Start”; the last single announced Ty’s bold intentions, and this track continues the proactive, frank and forward-looking message that has captured the public’s attention. The theme is set over a unique groove, a built-up arrangement that is neither fast nor slow, cuts are provided by Harry Love. In Ty’s words, the lyrics are “hopeful yet firm….There is a change in music coming, and this song heralds that change. We want substance over empty pop rhetoric and we want to have fun”. The video, which features an inspirational lone b-girl dancer Teneisha Bonner, has premiered with an exclusive on MTV Base and will launch online imminently.
The second track, “Well Well Well” is a tribal 4-to-the-floor musical experiment; out-there inventive, yet with a supremely catchy, breezy feel. Collaborators on this exciting track include drummer Richard Spaven (Flying Lotus/4Hero/Jose James/Cinematic Orchestra), Joy Jones on co-vocals and Jason Yarde (Manu Dibango/Plan B) on horns. “It’s me breaking from the norm”, says Ty; “One Verse, One Message Overall, One Human Race.”
The release will also feature a set of killer remixes, to be announced, as well as Instrumentals and A Cappellas.
While many may know Ty simply as a great rapper or MC, he has always been involved in the composition and production of his music, and this has deepened over the course of his four albums (also leading to additional work for Scratch Perverts, Talib Kweli, Blak Twang and Arrested Development). These new Ty tracks, co-produced with long-time collaborator and musical brother Drew Horley at his London studio, have Ty’s DNA running right through them from beats to composition to lyrics. While a lifelong love of hip hop initially set him on his path, Ty’s influences come from prog rock, jazz, and strange records of all descriptions. With a reputation built on his originality and instinctive refusal to hop on any industry bandwagon, he is known for his honest lyrics which have set him aside from much mainstream hip hop, allowing him total artistic independence. In 2001, Ty released his acclaimed debut album, ‘Awkward’ on Big Dada. 2003’s ‘Upwards’ then won him the Mercury Prize nomination; and ‘Closer’ followed in 2006, again to many plaudits. Since his fourth LP, ‘Special Kind of Fool’ (2010 via BBE), Ty has featured and collaborated with acts all around the World, including a recent track with former Radio 1 DJ and producer Kissy Sell Out. Look out for more live dates in the near future.
